Ceres : Evolution and Present State

چکیده
Introduction: We consider Ceres as a prototype for planetary evolution [1]. From thermal modeling by McCord and Sotin [2, 3, 4], Ceres was inferred to have differentiated into a rocky core of hydrated silicates, and an icy outer shell. Thomas et al. [5] confirmed such a model from direct observation of Ceres’s shape from Hubble Space Telescope observations, and pervious occultation measurements. McCord and Sotin [4] also suggest that Ceres could have preserved a deep ocean, especially if ammonia or some other ice melting point depressant was incorporated during accretion. We continue to develop thermal modeling of Ceres, using increasingly sophisticated models and new observational information in order to match the observed shape. In particular, we investigate the evolution of the core.

Core cracking and hydrothermal circulation can profoundly affect Ceres' geophysical evolution
Observations and models of Ceres suggest that its evolution was shaped by interactions between liquid water and silicate rock. Hydrothermal processes in a heated core require both fractured rock and liquid. Using a new core cracking model coupled to a thermal evolution code, we find volumes of fractured rock always large enough for significant interaction to occur. Therefore, liquid persistence...
متن کاملRotational Motion of Ceres
Ceres is the most massive body of the asteroid belt and contains about 25 wt.% (weight percent) of water. Understanding its thermal evolution and assessing its current state are major goals of the Dawn Mission. Constraints on its internal structure can be inferred from various observations. Especially, detailed knowledge of the rotational motion can help constrain the mass distribution inside t...
متن کاملLetter to the Editor Co-orbital objects in the main asteroid belt
We have investigated the possibility of main belt asteroids being trapped in the 1:1 resonance with other asteroids. Using contemporary mass estimates for the large asteroids (1) Ceres, (2) Pallas and (4) Vesta, it is found that four asteroids are temporarily trapped in such resonances with Ceres and Vesta during numerical integrations spanning 2 × 106 yr. In particular, the asteroid (1372) Har...

Article history: Received 14 January 2016 Received in revised form 8 August 2016 Accepted 7 September 2016 Available online xxxx This study examines the evolution of the GERB-2 and GERB-1 Edition 1 shortwave radiance calibration between 2004–2007 and 2007–2012 respectively, through comparisonwith CERES instrument FM1Edition 3A SSF instantaneous radiances. Two periods when simultaneous observati...
متن کاملOn the composition of ices incorporated in Ceres
We use the clathrate hydrate trapping theory (Lunine & Stevenson 1985) and the gas drag formalism of Weidenschilling (1977) to calculate the composition of ices incorporated in the interior of Ceres. In the spirit of the work of Cyr et al. (1998), and using a time dependent solar nebula model, we show that icy solids can drift from beyond 5 AU to the present location of the asteroid and be pres...
